Scottie Scheffler’s Shocking Reveal: Caddie’s Health Scare at The Open Championship

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler battled through a challenging second round at the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, posting a second consecutive 1-under 70. However, the real battle was happening off the course as Scheffler revealed his caddie, Ted Scott, was suffering from a bout of food poisoning.

 

Scheffler, who sits tied for fourth at 2-under par, five shots behind 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry, shared that his trusted caddie had been under the weather since Thursday night. Despite the illness, Scott managed to soldier through the day, even though he was visibly struggling.

 

“Yeah, he had a bit of food poisoning last night—or maybe it was a stomach bug. But he seemed to feel better as the day went on. The doc here took good care of him, but he didn’t sleep much last night,” Scheffler said. “We didn’t know if he was going to be able to go this morning, but he fought it out. You probably saw him lying down quite a bit out there, which was pretty funny.”

 

Scheffler’s day was filled with unusual sights, like seeing Scott sitting on the 10th tee while the group was finishing up on the 9th hole. “It’s just one of those deals. You’re used to him being in one position, standing by the bag, and then all of a sudden, he’s sitting on the 10th tee for like 10 minutes,” Scheffler noted. “He’s a fighter. He did a good job today and battled through it.”

 

Despite these distractions, Scheffler’s performance this season has been nothing short of stellar. With six victories and 13 top-10 finishes in 15 PGA Tour starts, Scheffler has amassed an astonishing $27,696,858 as of June 2024. He also shattered an ‘unbreakable’ OWGR record set by Tiger Woods in 2000.

 

Interestingly, if Scott’s earnings were placed on the current 2024 PGA Tour season earnings list, he would rank 46th, just behind reigning FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland. This puts him ahead of several PGA Tour stars, including former FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel and major champions Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott.

 

As Scheffler continues his quest for a seventh victory of the season and a third major title, his caddie’s determination and resilience will undoubtedly be a source of inspiration. The bond between player and caddie, tested in the crucible of competition and illness, remains as strong as ever.
