Tiger Woods bombs at The Masters as Erik van Rooyen keeps fighting
On another challenging day at Augusta National, South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen faced a tough battle, navigating through the course with determination. Despite his efforts, Van Rooyen carded a six-over 78, bringing his total score to nine-over for the tournament, following earlier rounds of 71 and 76.
As a result of his round, Van Rooyen slipped down the leaderboard, plummeting 17 places to share 47th position. Meanwhile, tournament favorite and world number one Scottie Scheffler maintained his lead with a resilient one-under 71, holding a one-stroke advantage over Colin Morikawa and a two-stroke lead over Max Homa.
Bryson DeChambeau, who entered the weekend sharing the lead with Scheffler, faltered, dropping to fifth place on three-under after carding a three-over 75. Despite a highlight hole-out birdie from the fairway at the 18th, DeChambeau couldn’t maintain his position at the top.
For Van Rooyen, the third round proved to be a struggle, with only one birdie throughout the day, coming at the signature par three 12th hole. Turning at two-over, Van Rooyen faced further challenges, dropping a shot at the 10th before regaining ground with a birdie at the 12th.
However, a disappointing finish marred his round as he bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes, followed by a deflating double bogey at the 18th, resulting in a four-over back nine.
Despite the difficulties, Van Rooyen remains ahead of Tiger Woods, who sits at 11-over in a share of 52nd place. Woods, a five-time Masters champion, endured a tough third round, carding a 10-over 82, effectively ending any hopes of contention on Sunday.
