Rafael Nadal is widely known for his incredible tennis career, but what many might not realize is his deep passion for golf. Recently, the Spanish superstar took a moment to celebrate fellow countryman Ángel Hidalgo, who made waves in the golfing world with a stunning victory.

 

Hidalgo, ranked World No. 398 going into the Acciona Open de España, shocked the competition by not only reaching the finals but defeating none other than Jon Rahm, a former World No. 1 and two-time Major champion. The 26-year-old’s first DP World Tour win was a triumphant moment that captured the attention of sports fans across Spain, including Nadal, who offered heartfelt congratulations to Hidalgo, runner-up Rahm, and third-place finisher David Puig on Instagram.

 

Though Nadal dominates on the tennis court, he’s also an avid golfer—though, as he admits, not without his challenges. In an interview with GOLFTV, Nadal revealed that he’s never taken an official golf lesson. Despite being self-taught, he finds creative ways to navigate his imperfections.

 

“I never received a single golf lesson in my life. So I’m kind of handicapped out there,” Nadal joked. “I know I have a bad swing, but I try to make it work—put the ball in the middle and avoid stupid mistakes on the course.”

 

Yet, despite these self-perceived flaws, Nadal’s passion for golf remains strong, and he continually strives to improve. He explained that when things go wrong, he takes the time to analyze and adjust his game—albeit with the acknowledgment that his methods aren’t as polished as those of a seasoned coach.

 

“When I make mistakes, I try to figure out what’s going on and fix it. It might not be the most professional approach, but it works enough for me to enjoy the game and get better.”

 

Interestingly, Nadal’s golf swing, which has been a subject of light-hearted criticism from fans and even fellow athletes, hasn’t held him back entirely. In June, following his early exit from the French Open, the 38-year-old tennis legend went on to win the 2024 Nations Cup, an amateur golf tournament in his hometown of Mallorca.

 

So while Nadal’s tennis prowess remains unmatched, his love for golf shows that he’s always up for a new challenge—even if his swing isn’t perfect.
