CBS reporter Amanda Balionis couldn’t suppress a laugh and a smile as she commented on McIlroy’s ‘interesting week’ during their interview. This moment has only fueled the unconfirmed speculations circulating online about a possible romantic connection between McIlroy, 35, and Balionis, 38. These rumors gained traction after the Daily Mail published an unsubstantiated report suggesting a relationship between the two, following McIlroy’s unexpected divorce from his wife, Erica Stoll.
Adding to the intrigue, a viral social media post hinted at a budding romance between McIlroy and Balionis. The golf reporter has been a prominent figure on CBS’s PGA Tour coverage for seven years and has recently been spotted without her wedding ring, sparking further gossip about her own marital status.
However, Us Weekly released another unsubstantiated report earlier this week, attempting to quash the rumors. According to their sources, McIlroy and Balionis maintain a strictly professional relationship. Despite these reassurances, Balionis’ demeanor during the interview—marked by a smirk—did little to dampen the speculation.
Throughout their interaction, McIlroy seemed to avoid making eye contact, often glancing towards the floor. Despite this, he provided a thoughtful response to Balionis’ questions about his performance and mindset.
After a stellar final-round score of 64 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club, McIlroy discussed his week with Balionis. He expressed doubt that his performance would secure a win, as his Ryder Cup teammate Bob MacIntyre was leading. Nonetheless, McIlroy achieved a top-five finish, marking another impressive showing in his career.
Here’s how the conversation unfolded:
“Joining us now is Rory McIlroy, tied for the low round of the day. We’re watching right now, do you think what you just did could be enough?” Balionis asked with a radiant smile.
McIlroy responded, “Ah, I don’t think so. I wish it was. Had a couple of good opportunities on the way in. A good chance at 14 that just missed, and also on 15 too. I mean, selfishly it would be nice if it was enough, but Bob is a good friend of mine, Ryder Cup teammate, and it would be really good to see him get the job done.”
Balionis continued, “You had an interesting week. I know you on Thursday, you said you played the back nine blind, and then on Friday you felt out of whack, then you found something in your swing. Talk about the progression with this week and where you find yourself. It must give yourself a ton of confidence moving forward?”
“Yeah, didn’t do a lot of practice last week. Only saw nine holes in practice. Swing was a bit of out of sorts, worked on the range Friday night and found something. Played a great weekend, 11-under. Played both rounds with Tom Kim, which was a lot of fun, love being out there with him. We had a great weekend, probably won’t be enough, but something to build on going into Memorial and the US Open,” McIlroy elaborated.
The interview, with its subtle tensions and underlying rumors, has left fans eagerly dissecting every word and gesture. As the golf season continues, so too will the speculation about McIlroy and Balionis, ensuring that their next interaction will be closely watched.
