Tiger Woods Misses US Open Cut, Leaving Jack Nicklaus’ Record Safe

Tiger Woods pocketed a tidy sum despite missing the cut at the US Open.

The golf legend entered the tournament aiming to win the major for the fourth time, which would have tied him with Jack Nicklaus’ record. However, a disappointing 36 holes left the Golden Bear’s record safe for another year at least.

 

Despite starting strongly, Woods finished his two rounds seven over par, just two shots over the cut limit, with 74 golfers making the cut at five over.

 

While Woods might be disappointed, he still received £7,900 ($10,000) for making the initial cut in North Carolina. “We pay you even if you miss the cut because we really believe that making the cut at the US Open is getting one of these 156 spots,” explained USGA chief executive Mike Whan. “Think about it, of 10,200 who attempt to qualify, only 156 are here.”

 

While Woods will appreciate having something to show for his efforts, it will be of little comfort after failing to match the tournament record of Nicklaus, Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, and Ben Hogan, who have each won the US Open four times. This also means Woods missed the chance to close the gap on Nicklaus’ record of 18 major titles, with Woods currently holding 15.

 

Having last won the US Open in 2008, Woods confessed uncertainty about future participation. When asked if this will be his last US Open outing, Woods responded, “As far as my last Open Championship or U.S. Open Championship, I don’t know what that is. It may or may not be.”

 

Woods reflected on his performance, stating, “I hit a lot of good shots that just didn’t quite go my way, or I hit good putts, and then I put myself in a couple bad spots with some bad lag putts. But again, as I said, it was probably the highest score I could have shot today.”

 

He added, “It’s one of those things where in order to win a golf tournament, you have to make the cut. I can’t win the tournament from where I’m at, so it certainly is frustrating.”

 

Woods’ future in the majors remains uncertain, as the physical demands and competitive nature of the sport continue to challenge him.
