Golf star Rory McIlroy has retreated to his US mansion with his family following his crushing defeat at the US Open, compounded by a dramatic U-turn on his decision to divorce his wife, Erica Stoll.

 

Having just won the Wells Fargo Championship on May 12, McIlroy’s world turned upside down when he filed for divorce the following day, citing his marriage as “irretrievably broken.” This shocking news was followed by a disappointing performance at the US Open, where he lost to Bryson DeChambeau. McIlroy described it as the “toughest” day of his career, saying, “As I reflect on my week, I’ll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly the 2 missed putts on 16 and 18 on the final day.”

 

In the wake of his professional and personal turmoil, McIlroy announced a hiatus from golf, withdrawing from the final Signature Event of the PGA TOUR season to spend time with his family in their $22 million Florida mansion. Just a day after his announcement, the family was seen enjoying a day out, a rare public appearance since the divorce rumors surfaced. McIlroy and Stoll, still wearing their wedding rings, appeared to have reconciled, putting to rest the speculation about McIlroy’s relationship with CBS Sports presenter Amanda Balionis.

 

McIlroy addressed the rumors directly, telling The Guardian, “There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool’s game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

 

Friends of the golfer hinted that the financial implications of a divorce may have influenced his decision to reconcile. With a net worth of over £200 million and projected career earnings potentially doubling that amount, McIlroy faced the prospect of losing a significant portion of his fortune. “Perhaps, the cold realisation of exactly how much the divorce could cost him hit hard,” a friend told the Daily Mail.

 

During their separation, the couple underwent marriage counselling and met every weekend for four weeks, initially discussing co-parenting their daughter before deciding to reunite. Now, McIlroy has time to rebuild his marriage and recover from his golfing loss before his anticipated return at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon.
