LIV Golf’s Boldest Rebel Faces Potential Humiliation: Pat Perez on the Brink of Relegation

Pat Perez, one of the most outspoken figures in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf venture, is facing a daunting challenge that could lead to his relegation from the tour in 2025. A prominent switch from the PGA Tour in June 2022, the 48-year-old golfer is perilously close to the ‘Drop Zone’ in the 2024 standings, threatening his future in the lucrative series.

Teetering on the Edge

Currently ranked 47th in the individual standings, Perez has just five events left to secure his spot in the series. The pressure mounts as the remaining tournaments are set to take place in Valderrama, Spain (July 14-16), Rocester, UK, and in the U.S. locations of West Virginia, Chicago, and Dallas. After winning the Team Championship, he didn’t mince words in responding to Tiger Woods, who had questioned the ambitions of LIV Golf’s stars. On the Son of a Butch podcast, Perez retorted, “That’s the stupidest s*** I have ever heard of in my life,” and further criticized Woods’ comments as “one of the stupidest things I think he has said.”

Perez argued that the financial incentives in LIV Golf far outweighed those in the PGA Tour, stating, “The incentive is the fact that last place is £120,000, first place is £4million. You cannot win £4m on the PGA Tour. He [Woods] had a lot of guarantees. You know what, and he was the hottest thing. He’s made so much money off the course, he found incentive to go.”

A LIV Loyalist

Initially, Perez had claimed he would avoid conflicts with his past affiliations. However, as his commitment to LIV Golf deepened, he retracted those claims, asserting, “I have no ill feelings toward the PGA Tour or any of the players. I’m a LIV guy 100 per cent. I’m going to play for them. But I don’t feel any need to go after the PGA Tour.”

Perez isn’t the only one feeling the heat. Fellow 4Aces members Harold Varner III and South African Branden Grace are also close to relegation. Meanwhile, twice Masters champion Bubba Watson, despite being in the bottom five, is safe due to an exception that protects team captains from demotion.
