Ryder Cup legend completely disagrees with Shane Lowry after Open comments – ‘Nonsense’

Ryder Cup legend Paul McGinley has cautioned Shane Lowry that he may regret his outspoken comments about the setup at The Open. Lowry, who was in contention for the title at Troon, expressed his frustration with the weather and tee times, calling them “nonsense”. However, McGinley disagreed, stating that the challenging conditions were simply part of the links golf experience.

Lowry had been leading the tournament by three shots at one stage, but struggled in the windy conditions on Saturday, ultimately finishing in sixth place behind winner Xander Schauffele. After his round, Lowry voiced his concerns about the setup, suggesting that the tees should have been moved forward to account for the strong winds.

However, McGinley, speaking on the Golf Channel’s ‘Live From’ show, dismissed Lowry’s complaints, saying: “That’s links golf courses. Yes, the guys at the end got screwed, and yes, the golfing gods decided to shuffle the pack by making the leaders play in the toughest weather conditions, but that’s the perils of playing links golf and that’s kind of part of what you have to accept.”

McGinley also suggested that Lowry may come to regret his comments, saying: “Shane will regret that comment. I know what he’s like; he was hot when he came off. He let a great opportunity slip to win this tournament, and he knew that. He was hot, he had to do press, and he said things that I’m sure he has regretted because nobody loves links golf courses more than he does.”

Despite the disappointment of missing out on the title, Lowry will be looking to bounce back at the upcoming 3M Open, BMW Championship, and TOUR Championship. With a strong finish to the season, he can still end 2024 on a high note. However, McGinley’s words of caution may serve as a reminder for Lowry to keep his emotions in check and respect the traditions of the game.
