Rising Star: Charlie Woods Takes on the Press Thornton Junior Masters with Fellow Golf Legends’ Sons

At just 15 years old, Charlie Woods is set to compete in the Press Thornton Junior Masters this week, marking another significant milestone in his young golfing career. Following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Tiger Woods, who reached the US Junior Amateur’s semifinals at 14 and went on to win three titles, Charlie is proving to be a promising talent in the world of golf.

A Legacy in the Making

Last week, Charlie successfully qualified for his first-ever USGA event at Oakland Hills. But before he tees off there, he will be competing on the greens of Dothan Country Club in Dothan, Alabama. The tournament begins on June 27, and Charlie will start his round at 7:21 AM from the 10th hole, joined by a team of star golfers’ sons.

A Star-Studded Lineup

Future Masters Golf has highlighted the incredible lineup in Charlie’s group, which includes the sons of major champions. Charlie Woods will be playing alongside Jacob Immelman, a Clemson signee and the son of 2008 Masters Champion Trevor Immelman. Also in the group is Liam Curtis, son of 2003 Open Champion Ben Curtis, and Henry Kuehne, whose father, Hank, is a US Amateur Champion and winner of the Telus Quebec Open and Texas Challenge in 2002.

The Thought Behind the Grouping

Tournament coordinator Angelia Wade Turner explained the rationale behind this unique pairing. “Tee times are usually random, but we make some adjustments. We felt like the four PGA players’ sons would be more comfortable being paired together,” Turner said. Last year’s winner, Carson Baez, will also be competing, teeing off in the group right behind them.

Building Chemistry on the Course

Interestingly, two players in Charlie’s group, Woods and Immelman, have played together before at the AJGA’s UNIQLO/Adam Scott Junior Championship earlier this year. While Immelman finished T-32, Woods secured a T-27 finish, showcasing their competitive spirit and camaraderie.

The Path Ahead: PGA Tour Aspirations

Amid these junior events, there’s a growing buzz around Charlie Woods potentially receiving a sponsor invite to the PGA Tour. Despite a challenging start in February at the Cognizant Classic pre-qualifiers, where he failed to qualify, and a disappointing 9-over 81 at the U.S. Open qualifiers, there’s still hope for his future in professional golf.

 

While his peers, like Kris Kim and AGJA no. 1 Miles Russell, are making strides on the PGA Tour, the question remains: Will Charlie Woods soon join them with a sponsor invite?
