Rory McIlroy Faces Tricky LIV Golf Question After Receiving Tiger Woods Boost

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods’ innovative golf league, TGL, is set to officially launch in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, at the beginning of 2025. This comes after an initial start date was postponed due to various issues with the league’s venue.

A Unique Vision for Golf

McIlroy and Woods conceived TGL in 2022 as a response to the emergence of the LIV Golf setup. Unlike traditional golf, TGL will feature a simulator-based league showcasing six teams from the PGA Tour, including McIlroy and Woods, who will lead their own four-man rosters. This innovative approach aims to modernize the game and provide a new viewing experience.

Comparisons to LIV Golf

The team format of TGL has inevitably drawn comparisons to LIV Golf, which also emphasizes team competitions alongside individual leaderboards. However, McIlroy has been quick to differentiate TGL from its rival. Speaking about these comparisons following the launch of his Boston Common team last November, McIlroy emphasized that TGL aims to complement, not disrupt, the PGA Tour.

“I think this is meant to be complementary. It’s not meant to be disruptive in any way,” McIlroy said. “So whenever Mike McCarley brought this idea to Tiger and I, I think one of the first things we said, well, ‘If you’re going to do this, we’re going to have to try to partner with the PGA Tour in some way and really try to make this complementary.’”

Innovating the Game

McIlroy further explained that TGL is designed to add to the golfing ecosystem rather than compete with it. He believes TGL’s unique format sets it apart from traditional golf and even from LIV Golf, which he argues has failed to strike the right balance between innovation and tradition. “I think when you look at — we’re pretending to be competitive and it’s a different type of golf, but it’s not the traditional golf you see week in and week out,” McIlroy added. “I don’t want to sit here and talk about LIV, but I think you can make an argument that they haven’t innovated enough away from what traditional golf is. Or they’ve innovated too much that they’re not traditional golf. They’re sort of caught in no-man’s land. Where [TGL] is so far removed from what we know golf to be.”

Financial and Celebrity Backing

Despite the delay in launching, TGL received a significant boost earlier this week. TGL’s parent company, TMRW Sports, has been valued at nearly £400 million ($500 million) according to Bloomberg. This valuation is supported by a roster of high-profile investors, including Fenway Sports Group, Lewis Hamilton, Gareth Bale, and Justin Bieber.

Star-Studded Player Roster

TGL also boasts an impressive lineup of players. Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, and Collin Morikawa are among the 24-man roster, joining McIlroy and Woods. While Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton have moved to the LIV setup, the roster was completed with the recent addition of Hideki Matsuyama.
