Teenage Golf Prodigy Miles Russell to Debut at PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic

In a groundbreaking moment for the golfing world, 15-year-old Miles Russell is set to make his PGA Tour debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic later this month, adding another remarkable achievement to his burgeoning career.

Miles Russell first made headlines when he became the youngest player ever to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at just 15. His impressive performance at the LECOM Suncoast Classic on April 21, where he tied for 20th place, set a new benchmark as he became the youngest player since at least 1983 to finish in the top 25 in a Korn Ferry Tour or PGA Tour event

As the reigning American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Player of the Year, Russell’s accolades are already numerous. He clinched the Junior PGA Championship by a commanding 7-shot margin and became the youngest winner of the Junior Players Championship. His exceptional skills and achievements earned him the AJGA Player of the Year award at a younger age than golf legend Tiger Woods.

Russell’s entry into the Rocket Mortgage Classic, scheduled for June 27-30 at Detroit Golf Club, comes via one of four sponsor’s exemptions. The tournament, known for spotlighting future stars, is thrilled to welcome Russell to compete against the sport’s top professionals.

“The Rocket Mortgage Classic is known as a tournament where ‘future stars start,’ and we’re thrilled to have Miles make his PGA Tour debut here and add to that legacy,” said tournament director Jason Langwell. “He has proved with his many accomplishments at such a young age that he belongs, and we are excited to see Miles compete alongside the world’s best golfers here at Detroit Golf Club.”

Russell will be joining an exclusive group of teenage golfers making their PGA Tour debuts this season, including Kris Kim (16) and Blades Brown (16), who both competed earlier this year. Kim notably made the cut at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May.

Expressing his excitement and gratitude, Russell said, “I am thankful to Rocket Mortgage for giving me the opportunity to make my PGA Tour debut. Ever since I first started playing golf, my dream has been to compete on the PGA Tour and test my game against the best players, and I’m looking forward to making the most of the experience later this month.”

Russell’s journey to this point has not been without challenges. He narrowly missed qualifying for a PGA Tour event earlier this year, losing in a playoff for a spot in the Puerto Rico Open. However, his determination and resilience have only fueled his aspirations.

Russell’s remarkable achievements bring to mind other young prodigies in golf. Notably, China’s Guan Tianlang remains the youngest player to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, achieving the feat at 14 during the 2013 Masters.

As anticipation builds for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, all eyes will be on Miles Russell. His debut promises not only to add excitement to the tournament but also to signal the arrival of a new generation of golfing talent ready to challenge the status quo and carve their names into the sport’s storied history.
