Tyrrell Hatton’s initial commitment to Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods’ TGL league, alongside 23 other PGA Tour stars, took a turn when he joined LIV Golf, prompting his removal from the roster.
This move posed a challenge for McIlroy and Woods, who are co-founders of the indoor golf league slated to launch in January 2025 after a one-year delay due to stadium damage. Hatton, initially part of the Boston Common franchise with McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, and Adam Scott, had his name removed from the roster after opting for LIV Golf in February.
Consequently, McIlroy and Woods are now seeking replacements to complete their roster, with two spots left vacant. Jon Rahm’s departure to LIV Golf also contributed to the roster gap, as he chose to join Greg Norman’s team in December.
Rahm’s decision to leave TGL was announced shortly before his move to LIV Golf, where he established Legion XIII, partnering with his Ryder Cup teammate Hatton. Despite initially showing enthusiasm for TGL, Hatton made the switch to LIV Golf, signing with Legion XIII just days before the league’s inaugural event in Mexico.
Reflecting on his decision, Hatton disclosed that it was finalized with the aid of a coin toss, highlighting the swift nature of his move. He revealed, “I had a deadline of 7:30 on the Sunday night [before Mayakoba]. With the help of a coin toss,” he said with a smile, “I signed the contract at 7:29.”
Hatton’s departure from TGL marks a significant shift in the league’s roster dynamics, prompting McIlroy and Woods to explore alternative options to fill the void left by the English golfer.
