A trademark firm representing Tiger Woods has issued a ‘cease and desist’ letter to a Welsh golf course over concerns regarding a similar name to one of the legend’s own ventures. The new play-and-party golf course, located in Anglesey, North Wales, is the brainchild of local professional golfer Matthew Wharton and was initially set to be named PuttStroke.
However, the premium mini-golf experience caught the attention of a trademark firm representing the golfing icon Woods, as it bears similarities to PopStroke, a business partly owned by Woods operating in the US. JA Kemp, a leading patent and trademark company in London, intervened after noticing the resemblance between the proposed name and Woods’ venture.
Wharton, 50, cheekily mentioned in a previous article that he was taking inspiration from mini golf courses designed by Tiger Woods and his team, which likely drew attention to the venture. In response to the ‘cease and desist’ letter, Wharton expressed surprise but also saw it as a compliment, suggesting that perhaps Woods is concerned about the competition.
Wharton stated, “I was a bit shocked to receive the letter. It arrived pretty soon after I announced the venture. I was surprised it had caught Tiger’s eye so quickly, but I suppose in a way that’s quite a compliment – maybe it shows he’s worried about the competition!”
Acknowledging the need for a new name to avoid confusion, Wharton is seeking inspiration from the public for a suitable replacement. He emphasized the importance of promoting the Welsh language and encouraged suggestions that would translate well and prioritize Welsh identity.
In the US, PopStroke offers luxury clubhouses, indoor children’s playgrounds, and premium-turfed 18-hole putting courses, with plans to expand across the country. Meanwhile, Wharton’s Golf Mon venture is utilizing an old golf course and driving range in Llangefni, which closed in 2018.
Construction work on the new project has already commenced, featuring floodlight greens and dining facilities, including a pizza restaurant already in operation on the site.
Despite the legal dispute, fans of Tiger Woods were treated to a lighthearted moment recently when the 48-year-old appeared to give a handshake to a tree during a broadcast, sparking viral attention on social media.
