Jeff Shanahan, President of the Cobbs Creek Foundation, expressed profound gratitude for the support from the Jordan Spieth Family Foundation. Extensive research by the Friends of Cobbs Creek Golf Course, in collaboration with the Delaware County Historical Society, uncovered that the current greens are built over a significant stop on the Underground Railroad, historically owned by Quaker abolitionist Samuel Rhodes.

 

Decades after this historical milestone, the “Olde Course” opened, rapidly establishing itself as a premier venue for golfers of color. It served as the home ground for the United Golfers Association and was instrumental in the career of Charlie Sifford, the first Black athlete to join the PGA Tour full-time in 1961.

 

Charlie Sifford’s legacy is a deeply personal inspiration to Tiger Woods, whose interest in Cobbs Creek was rekindled after years of mismanagement and a devastating fire that razed the clubhouse in 2016. Its historical significance, because it fought against discrimination, it fought against racism and it opened its doors and its greens and its tees to Black and brown golfers requires us to make sure that we treasure it.”

 

Following the temporary closure of the venue in 2019, the Cobbs Creek Foundation was awarded a 70-year lease and has committed to an £80 million renovation. Tiger Woods, through his TGR Foundation, is financing a branch of his TGR Learning Lab at the facility. This lab will provide education in advanced technical skills, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and robotics. Additionally, Woods is overseeing the development of an adjacent, accessible short course designed to attract golfers of all skill levels.

 

The comprehensive “state-of-the-art facilities” planned for Cobbs Creek include a completely renovated 18-hole golf course capable of hosting PGA Tour events, paying homage to the club’s illustrious past when it hosted such events in the 1950s, providing Black golfers with rare opportunities to compete at the highest level.
