As Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson gears up for the ISPS Handa Championship, he’s tapping into a legendary wellspring of inspiration: Tiger Woods. Set against the backdrop of Taiheiyo Golf Club in Gotemba, the site of Woods’ dramatic 2001 World Cup showdown, Ferguson is poised to harness the same relentless drive that propelled the golf icon to greatness.

 

In a nail-biting finale etched in golfing lore, Woods, alongside partner David Duval, staged a jaw-dropping comeback, defying the odds with birdies and an unforgettable eagle chip on the final hole. While the victory eluded them in the end, Ferguson finds himself captivated by the electrifying highlights of that historic showdown, eager to infuse his own game with a touch of that magic.

 

Reflecting on his preparation, Ferguson shares, “I always look back at highlights from previous tournaments at the venue. I watched the highlights from 2001 with Tiger and Duval. We were watching Tiger’s chip in on the 72nd hole in 2001, which was cool.”

 

As he steps onto the immaculate greens of Taiheiyo Golf Club, Ferguson is fueled by anticipation. “There’s been a few changes since then but, I’m buzzing to get going. I’ve been out on the course a few times and it plays amazing. The greens are so pure, it’s a tree-lined destination, can’t beat it. I’m enjoying it.”

 

Despite a brief hiatus from competition, Ferguson exudes confidence, acknowledging the potential for early-round jitters. “I have not played for three weeks so may be a bit rusty, but a few holes in you start to find your feet. Anything can happen in any week in golf.”

 

With a string of solid performances this season, Ferguson eyes the top spot, aiming to elevate his game to new heights. “Been playing consistent (this season), hopefully get myself up there and into contention this week, and if not a bit more often in future. My golf has been good, just a couple of shots here and there would push it to the next level.”

 

Having missed just one cut in nine events this season, Ferguson’s steady climb up the ranks positions him as a formidable contender. As he tees off at the ISPS Handa Championship, the echoes of Tiger’s triumphs serve as a powerful reminder of the resilience and grit required to conquer the course.
