In the lead-up to his highly anticipated bout against Oleksandr Usyk next month, Tyson Fury found himself amidst swirling rumors regarding his training camp. Speculation arose earlier this year suggesting that Fury had been dropped in sparring sessions by his sparring partner, Jai Opetaia.

 

Opetaia, the cruiserweight champion, had been brought in to assist Fury in his preparations for the clash with Usyk, originally slated for February 17. However, Opetaia departed Fury’s training camp in Saudi Arabia after just a few days to focus on his own upcoming fight against Marius Breidis on the undercard.

 

The abrupt exit of Opetaia fueled whispers suggesting that he had managed to floor the heavyweight champion during their training sessions, casting doubt on Fury’s readiness for the forthcoming showdown with Usyk. However, Opetaia swiftly dismissed these rumors, labeling them as “all b******t” while expressing his frustration with reporters spreading false claims.

 

Reflecting on his time in Fury’s camp, Opetaia shared, “It was a great experience. I’m so grateful to be called into that camp, being surrounded by other champions and world-class athletes, it’s just a whole other learning curve to be part of their camp for a week and a bit to see how they do things. It was all positive. He earned my respect and I’m sure I earned his.”

 

Opetaia clarified that his departure was driven by the need to focus on his own fight against Breidis, which required specific orthodox sparring that Fury’s camp couldn’t provide. Despite the short duration of his stay, Opetaia expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the experience gained.

 

With the clash against Usyk postponed to May 18, Fury remains unwavering in his dedication to the sport. “I’m not really proving anybody wrong or right anymore, I’m just doing it for the fun and love of the game really,” Fury remarked. Despite the allure of retirement and a comfortable lifestyle, Fury’s passion for boxing continues to drive him forward. “I’ll continue to do it until I can’t do any more,” he affirmed.
