Tyson Fury removed from IBF heavyweight rankings ahead of Oleksandr Usyk rematch, but the reason why makes perfect sense

Tyson Fury has been removed from the IBF heavyweight rankings, a surprising development given his high-profile status. The latest rankings now feature Bakhodir Jalolov, who has taken Fury’s spot.

The removal follows Fury’s first career defeat, a points loss to Oleksandr Usyk in May during their undisputed championship bout. Fury and Usyk are scheduled for a rematch on December 21, but this fight will only involve the WBA, WBC, and WBO titles—making the IBF title irrelevant in this context.

Since Fury is challenging only for the WBA, WBC, and WBO belts, the IBF has decided to exclude him from their rankings. This decision is rooted in the fact that Usyk has vacated the IBF title, which means the organization has no immediate reason to keep Fury listed.

The IBF title is now held by Daniel Dubois, who was upgraded from interim champion after Usyk’s departure. Dubois is set to defend his title against Anthony Joshua on September 21, with the winner expected to face the victor of Fury vs. Usyk.

In the IBF rankings, Joshua stands as the top contender behind Dubois, aiming for his third world heavyweight title. Agit Kabayel, Jared Anderson, and Zhilei Zhang follow Joshua, while British fighters Joe Joyce and Fabio Wardley are ranked 10th and 12th, respectively.

Fury has already commenced his training for the rematch, sending a defiant message to Usyk: “Listen up! I’ve conquered everything in boxing—titles, records, the lot. But I’ve never had to come back from a loss. On December 21st in Riyadh, in the heart of the kingdom, the king will reclaim his throne and become undisputed. @usykaa, I’m coming for you!
