In a devastating turn of events, PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray’s cause of death has been revealed as a suspected suicide. According to DailyMail.com, Murray, 30, died from carbon monoxide poisoning after reportedly filling his townhouse with exhaust fumes.

Murray is believed to have left his Land Rover running in the ground-floor garage of his three-story property in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, before heading upstairs. The vehicle’s fumes are suspected to have filled the home, leading to the golfer’s untimely death.

At around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, a neighbor heard the prolonged revving of a car engine, which abruptly stopped as they approached to investigate the noise. “My thought was maybe it was a kid revving a car. I went outside to investigate but by then there was no sound,” the neighbor recounted.

It wasn’t until the following morning that carbon monoxide alarms alerted the locals to a problem. Police were subsequently called to the townhouse, where Murray lived with his fiancée, Christiana Ritchie. Tragically, Murray was found dead in the main bedroom upstairs. His family later confirmed his death as a suicide.

A Palm Beach Gardens Police Department spokesman stated, “We are conducting an investigation into the matter that occurred in our city.” The police also emphasized that the initial inquiry revealed no signs of foul play and that there is no apparent risk to the public. The official statement noted, “The decedent was discovered on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at approximately 11:00 am. The initial inquiry does not reveal signs of foul play. There is no apparent risk to the public and no further information will be released as the investigation is being conducted.”

Murray’s parents, Eric and Terry, issued a heart-wrenching statement on Sunday, expressing their shock and grief. “We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.”

Murray’s death came just a day after he unexpectedly withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge, citing that he was feeling unwell to his playing partners.

Murray had openly discussed his battles with depression and alcoholism, sharing that he would drink during tournaments and play while hungover. His family and fiancée had been pivotal in his journey to sobriety and his requalification for the PGA Tour. Earlier this year, he celebrated a significant achievement by winning the Sony Open, marking his first Tour victory in seven years.
