In a dramatic turn of events, Elin Nordegren, the wife of famed golfer Tiger Woods, confronted one of his mistresses on the night she uncovered his widespread infidelity. This revelation eventually led to the end of their marriage.
On the night everything came to light, Elin chased Tiger out of their house wielding one of his golf clubs. This marked a drastic fall from grace for Woods, who had amassed a $1 billion (£706 million) fortune, including £78 million in endorsements. He had recently won the Masters in Australia and was photographed meeting then-President Barack Obama at the White House.
Despite the scandal, Woods continued to play golf, though his career has been under scrutiny. This week, ahead of the Open Championship, rival Colin Montgomerie suggested that Woods should retire, having struggled to regain his once-dominant form.
Woods and Elin share two children, Sam and Charlie. In November 2009, a story broke that Woods had been having an affair with New York City nightclub hostess Rachel Uchitel. She had been seen checking into the same hotel as Woods during the American Masters and reportedly told friends she was in love with him.
Desperate to quash the accusations before they went public, Woods put Elin on the phone with Rachel. The two women spoke for half an hour, but Elin wasn’t convinced. Later, Elin went through Woods’ phone and found another woman’s name, Jaimee Grubbs. She left a stern voicemail: “You know who this is, because you are f—ing my husband.”
Woods, unaware of Elin’s actions, also tried to contact Jaimee, leaving a voicemail saying: “Hey, it’s, uh … it’s Tiger. Can you please take your name off your phone? My wife went through my phone and, uh, may be calling you. So if you can, please take your name off that. And, um … just have it as a number on the voicemail. OK? You got to do this for me. Huge. Quickly. All right, bye.”
The story broke the next day on Thanksgiving, but Elin remained silent. It was later revealed that Woods had met Uchitel four months after their son was born. Uchitel had shared explicit messages from Woods with her friends, claiming Woods was divorcing his wife. Elin found some of these messages, including one that read: “You are the only one I’ve ever loved.”
In a confrontation, Elin reportedly woke Woods, who fled to the bathroom and began texting Uchitel, saying he had to leave. Elin threw his phone at him and chased him with a golf club. Woods got into his car and crashed it, with the back windows smashed. Elin claimed she had broken the windows to rescue him.
The couple refused to cooperate with police interviews, and within two weeks, 14 women had come forward claiming they had slept with Woods during his marriage. Woods lost endorsement deals with Nike, Gatorade, Gillette, and Accenture following the scandal. In a press conference, Woods admitted: “I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was not acceptable.”
He added: “For all that I have done, I am so sorry. I have a lot to atone for, but there’s one issue I really want to discuss. Some people have speculated that Elin somehow hurt or attacked me on Thanksgiving night. It hurts me that people would fabricate a story like that.” The couple divorced in August 2010.
