On April 10, Woods revealed his intention to resume discussions regarding his potential role as the US Ryder Cup captain for 2025, despite enduring physical challenges during the Masters tournament. The 15-time major champion, struggling with discomfort and mobility issues, expressed optimism about his golfing future while navigating through the demanding 72 holes at Augusta.
Delays in negotiations with the PGA of America, regarding his captaincy at Bethpage next year, were attributed to Woods’ unwavering belief in his ability to secure another coveted green jacket. Reflecting on his aspirations, Woods conveyed his determination to focus on the ongoing tournament before engaging in talks with PGA of America’s CEO, Seth Waugh, in the coming week.
Recovering from a significant setback due to right ankle surgery following a car accident in 2021, Woods acknowledged his persistent physical discomfort, stating, “I hurt every day. I ache. I ache every day.”
Despite his physical challenges, Woods impressed his friend Fred Couples during a practice session alongside Justin Thomas. Couples expressed confidence in Woods’ potential to triumph at Augusta, emphasizing his flawless shot execution despite evident ankle issues.
Acknowledging Woods’ resilience, Couples noted, “His ankle is bad. We know it. But he’s here, he’s going to walk 72 holes, and if he keeps playing like that, he’ll be a factor.”
Last year, Woods withdrew from the Masters after making the cut, opting out due to adverse weather conditions. However, his current demeanor and performance on the course have instilled hope among his peers, with Couples remarking, “He looks strong and he’s excited to play.”
Having secured five Masters titles, Woods’ most recent major victory occurred at Augusta National in 2019, marking a remarkable comeback from numerous setbacks, including back and knee surgeries.
