Tiger Woods will find himself paired with his former caddie, Joe LaCava, for the first time since their professional separation in 2023. LaCava, who left Woods’ bag after a 12-year stint to work full-time with Patrick Cantlay, now reunites with Woods in a star-studded group featuring Xander Schauffele and Cantlay.

We don’t have a ton in common and we see the world quite differently. But when I saw he was getting stick on the 17th and 18th greens, I tried to quieten the crowd for him. And I don’t think Fitz (Matt Fitzpatrick) and I were afforded the same opportunity to try and hole those putts to halve the match. I shook Joe’s hand, and Patrick’s hand. As I’m walking back to the locker room I can feel this red mist coming over me. ‘No! That wasn’t right.'”
McIlroy’s anger didn’t subside easily. Shane Lowry intervened to prevent McIlroy from confronting the USA team in their locker room. LaCava’s attempt to make amends the following morning with a text to McIlroy went unanswered. Even efforts by caddie Ricky Elliott and coach Claude Harmon III to smooth things over were futile. McIlroy candidly expressed his view, saying, “Joe LaCava used to be a nice guy when he was caddying for Tiger and now he’s caddying for that d*** he’s turned into an a**.”
As The Open unfolds, McIlroy will avoid immediate proximity to LaCava and Cantlay, as his own grouping with Max Homa and Tyrrell Hatton tees off earlier at 10:09 am BST. McIlroy, still chasing his first major victory in a decade, will be keen to maintain focus, especially given his strong track record at The Open, with six top-six finishes in his last eight starts since his 2014 triumph.
