The incredible Tiger Woods exchange with forgetful security at The Open revealed as golf icon thinks on his feet
Tiger Woods remains arguably the most recognized golfer in modern-day history. Yet, for one security guard on duty at an Open Championship, his fame didn’t quite register. This amusing tale was recounted by PGA tour golfer Michael Kim, shedding light on a humorous exchange and an impressive display of nonchalance by Woods.
As the 152nd Open at Royal Troon kicks off, Kim shared the story, highlighting Woods’ quick thinking after forgetting his credentials. Kim took to social media platform X, narrating the incident: “At the Open Championship, players get a clip as credentials to access the locker room and other restricted areas. In the mid-2000s, Tiger forgot his clip one day and was stopped by a security guard asking for his credentials. Tiger looked around, saw a massive billboard with his name and face on it, pointed to it, and said, ‘That’s my credentials,’ before walking into the locker room.”
This story of Woods’ quick wit and composure comes amidst other significant news about the golfing legend. Recently, Tiger reached out to fellow golfer Rory McIlroy following McIlroy’s disappointing performance at the US Open. Joining the ranks of sports icons like Michael Jordan and Rafael Nadal, Woods offered his support and understanding to McIlroy during a challenging time.
Woods shared his approach: “I just sent him a nice text. That was it. I waited a week before I sent it. I wanted to let it calm down. I know he was being besieged by a lot of different things going on and just let it cool down for a week. Just basically, as you know, I’m your friend. I know this is a difficult moment. We’ve all been there as champions. We all lose. Unfortunately, it just happened and the raw emotion of it, it’s still there. And it’s going to be there for, I’m sure, some time. The faster he’s able to get back on a horse and get back into contention, like he did last week, the better it is for him.”
Reflecting on his own experiences, Woods added, “There’s a lot of times I felt discomfort. Absolutely. Nervous, shaky, uncomfortable, all of it. That’s part of it. That’s why you love it. That’s why we practice, to build up ourselves in that one uncomfortable situation and bury it.”
As the golfing world eagerly watches the unfolding drama at Royal Troon, stories like these remind us of the humanity behind the legends. Tiger Woods continues to inspire with his resilience, humor, and unwavering support for his peers.
