The charges against Scheffler included a felony for allegedly assaulting a police officer with his vehicle, as well as three misdemeanors. The incident occurred outside the gates of Valhalla Golf Club on May 17, where Detective Bryan Gillis was directing traffic following a tragic pedestrian death.
According to Gillis, Scheffler, who was driving a PGA courtesy vehicle, “refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging” Gillis to the ground. Gillis sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. However, a surveillance video released by Louisville police last week raised questions about the sequence of events leading up to the arrest.
The video showed Gillis pursuing Scheffler’s vehicle on foot and ultimately restraining him, but it did not capture the initial interaction between the two. Gillis came under scrutiny for failing to activate his body-worn camera during the arrest, a lapse for which he has been disciplined.
Scheffler, for his part, maintained that he misunderstood the commands given by traffic officers and expressed relief at the dismissal of charges. The 27-year-old golfer spent a brief period in jail before returning to the course to complete the tournament, where he ultimately finished tied for eighth place.
