Scottie Scheffler set to pocket £6.2m bonus and can still boost earnings by £33m this year
Scottie Scheffler’s 2024 season continues to shine with remarkable financial rewards and potential for even greater earnings as the year progresses. The world’s top-ranked golfer has enjoyed an incredibly successful year, amassing substantial prize money and securing a significant bonus, with more opportunities to further increase his earnings before the season concludes.
As of now, Scheffler has already achieved an impressive feat by winning six PGA Tour events throughout the year. His recent victory at the Olympic Games, while not significantly impacting his financial standing, added to his growing list of accolades. To date, Scheffler has accumulated a staggering $28,148,691 (£22,115,582) in prize money alone, a testament to his exceptional performance on the golf course.
In addition to his impressive winnings, Scheffler is set to receive an additional $8 million (£6.2 million) bonus as a result of his top position in the Comcast Business Top 10. This bonus is part of a $20 million prize pool distributed among the top ten finishers in the FedEx Cup regular season standings. Comcast Business, which partnered with the PGA Tour as a title sponsor in 2021, created this reward system to honor the best performers of the season, and Scheffler’s position at the top ensures he will claim the maximum bonus available.
The season is not over yet, and Scheffler still has the opportunity to further enhance his earnings. Two major tournaments remain on the calendar: the FedEx St. Jude Championship and the BMW Championship, both of which feature a $20 million purse. The winners of these events will each earn €3.6 million (£2.8 million), adding to Scheffler’s already impressive financial haul. Following these events, Scheffler will compete in the Tour Championship, the season-ending tournament where the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings will vie for the championship title.
As the top seed in the Tour Championship, Scheffler will start the competition with a 10-under par advantage, thanks to a strokes-based system that rewards the best-performing players of the season. Given Scheffler’s outstanding form, he is well-positioned to contend for the top prize of $25 million (£20 million), which is awarded to the FedEx Cup champion.
Additionally, Scheffler’s potential earnings are further augmented by the Player Impact Program (PIP), which was introduced in the 2020/21 season. This program is designed to reward PGA Tour members who generate the most positive impact and visibility for the tour, measured through factors such as internet searches and social media reach. Despite some controversy and criticism labeling the program as a popularity contest, it remains a significant source of income for top players.
The PIP prize pool was initially set at $100 million (£79 million) for the top 20 players but has since been reduced to $50 million (£39 million) for the top 10 players. The winner of the PIP will receive $10 million (£8 million), a decrease from the $15 million Rory McIlroy received in 2023. Scheffler’s strong presence and influence suggest he may secure a substantial portion of this prize pool.
When all is considered, Scheffler stands to gain an additional $42.2 million (£33.2 million) from the remaining opportunities in the 2024 season. With his record-breaking achievements and the significant rewards still within reach, Scheffler is on track to potentially surpass his previous record for earnings in a single PGA Tour season, which was $21 million (£16 million) in the 2022/23 season. By the end of the year, his total earnings could reach unprecedented levels, underscoring a truly exceptional season in professional golf.
