The top-ranked golfer, who came into the tournament with high expectations, remained within touching distance of leader Hideki Matsuyama after Thursday’s round. However, his second day of play was marred by difficulties right out of the gate, culminating in disaster at the seventh hole.
Golf enthusiasts watched as Scheffler, usually masterful off the tee, sent his drive into the deep rough only located with the aid of fellow pro Rory McIlroy. Despite a challenging lie, he boldly attempted to reach near the green but made little progress, much to his visible dismay and resulting in an agitated exchange with caddie Ted Scott
Golf Channel commentator Brad Faxon didn’t mince words during the live coverage, remarking, “I think the divot went further than the ball.” With a tricky third shot leading to a less-than-ideal fourth, Scheffler faced a long bogey putt that slipped past the hole, leaving him to pen a double-bogey six on his card and lurch away from medal contention
Scheffler fell back to two-under for the tournament, trailing nine shots behind Matsuyama and clubhouse leader Xander Schauffele. However, birdies at 10 and 11 boosted his score to four-under, but he still has a mountain to climb if he hopes to leave Paris with a medal, currently five shots outside the medal positions.
Schauffele, Scheffler’s Team USA colleague, has been on fire over the past three months, clinching both the PGA Championship and The Open. He is now well-placed to bag his second Olympic gold medal, having won in Tokyo th
