In the world of golf, few have exhibited such a relentless and dominant streak as Scottie Scheffler. As the US Open at Pinehurst No. 2 looms, Rory McIlroy cheekily suggested that only a stint behind bars could disrupt Scheffler’s blazing run of victories. McIlroy’s light-hearted remark underscores the astonishing form of Scheffler, the world No. 1 golfer, who has clinched five wins in his last eight starts.

 

Scheffler’s incredible run includes victories at renowned tournaments like the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, The Masters, the RBC Heritage, and the Memorial. He also posted a strong showing at the PGA Championship. However, his near-invincibility faced a peculiar challenge last month.

 

In a bizarre turn of events before his second round at Valhalla, Scheffler found himself handcuffed and detained. Despite this shocking interruption, he returned to the course to deliver a stunning round of 66. Unfortunately, he couldn’t maintain the momentum, slipping with a 73 on Saturday as Xander Schauffele seized his first major victory.

When asked what he finds most commendable about Scheffler’s recent performances, McIlroy praised the American’s relentless drive. “I think just the relentlessness,” McIlroy noted. “Look, a lot of stuff went on in his life, as well. They’ve just had a new child. He’s been through some struggles in his game, particularly the putter that he’s been able to turn around. It’s not as if he hasn’t had his challenges along the way.”

 

McIlroy continued, “But yeah, I mean, the word that I describe it as is relentless. It seems like every time he shows up, he is the guy to beat, and deservedly so. This run that he’s been on, I think he’s played 14 times this year or 13 times this year, only once out of the top 10. Seems like he’s always in contention.”

 

Scheffler’s performance at the Memorial highlighted his tenacity. Despite a triple bogey on the 9th, he managed to regain his composure and make crucial birdies. “The most exciting thing about last week at Memorial was when he made the triple on 9. Everyone was like, ‘Oh, looks like he might let people in here’ – but he finds a way to steady the ship, make a few birdies when he needs to,” McIlroy remarked. “Undoubtedly the best player in the world at the minute by a long way. It’s up to us to try to get to his level.”

 

Scheffler’s recent brush with the law included charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. He denied the charges, which were later dropped. This incident marked his only finish outside the top two since the Genesis Invitational at Riviera, where he placed 10th.

 

As Scheffler and McIlroy prepare to tee off alongside PGA Championship victor Xander Schauffele on Thursday, all eyes will be on whether Scheffler can continue his dominant streak.
