Rory McIlroy, the four-time major champion, has revealed that he “resented” the Olympics due to the uncomfortable position it put him in regarding his international allegiance. The debate surrounding his representation in the Games led to a period of introspection and self-doubt, forcing him to question his identity and loyalties.

McIlroy, who was born in County Down, Northern Ireland, was eligible to represent both Ireland and Great Britain in the Olympics. However, he ultimately decided to represent Ireland, a decision rooted in his junior and amateur golfing history. This choice was not taken lightly, as McIlroy admitted to agonizing over what path to pursue.

In an interview with the Sunday Independent, McIlroy reflected on the debate surrounding his international allegiance, stating, “All of a sudden it put me in a position where I had to question who I am. Who am I? Where am I from? Where do my loyalties lie? Who am I going to play for? Who do I not want to (upset) the most?” He confessed that this period of uncertainty led him to resent the Olympics, feeling that it had put him in an impossible position.

Despite his initial reservations, McIlroy’s experience at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo proved to be a positive one. He came close to winning a medal, ultimately falling short in the bronze play-off. Following the Games, McIlroy revealed that he had enjoyed the experience, stating, “It’s a wonderful experience. I’ve never done anything like that before.” He acknowledged that his decision to participate in the Olympics was the right one, saying, “I think if I had to look back on my career and not played in one [Olympic Games], I probably would have regretted it.”

As McIlroy prepares to represent Team Ireland in the upcoming Olympics in Paris, he does so with a newfound appreciation for the Games. His journey towards self-discovery and acceptance has been a long and challenging one, but ultimately, it has led him to a place of clarity and purpose.
