Rory McIlroy, a prominent figure in the world of golf, has stirred significant controversy on the tour, culminating in a surprising revelation from one LIV Golf star’s wife. Ashley Perez, the wife of golfer Pat Perez, openly expressed a desire to see McIlroy punched in the face, highlighting the intense emotions and rivalries that have permeated the golfing community.

 

McIlroy, known for his vocal opposition to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour, once declared that he would prefer retirement over joining the breakaway league. However, Ashley’s comments were not directly tied to his stance on LIV Golf. Instead, they stemmed from the dramatic events at the 2023 Ryder Cup, where McIlroy played a pivotal role in Team Europe’s thrilling victory over Team USA.

 

Under the leadership of captain Luke Donald, Team Europe secured a 16½-11½ triumph, but the off-course tensions were equally significant. Ashley Perez took to social media to express her animosity towards McIlroy, posting, “I can’t possibly be the only one that would absolutely love to watch Rory get punched in the face. I mean that in the nicest way possible… kinda.”

 

This heated sentiment was a reaction to an altercation involving McIlroy and Jim Mackay, also known as Bones, at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. The incident occurred in the car park, following a contentious final hole where McIlroy clashed with American golfers Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark. Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, exacerbated the situation by waving his hat in front of McIlroy, causing a furious response from the Northern Irishman.

 

The confrontation escalated as Team Europe members Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, and McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, confronted LaCava. Captain Luke Donald later clarified, “Rory politely asked Joe to move aside. He was in his line. He stood there and didn’t move for a while and continued to wave his hat. So I think Rory was upset about that.”

 

McIlroy’s outspoken criticism of LIV Golf has only added fuel to the fire. He has repeatedly asserted that LIV Golf’s participants needed the Ryder Cup more than the prestigious competition needed them. This has created additional friction between him and those who have joined the controversial league, including Pat Perez.

 

Perez, who signed with LIV Golf in 2022 for a reported $10 million, has yet to achieve victory on the LIV circuit, despite his three PGA Tour wins. Interestingly, reports surfaced earlier this year suggesting that Perez and his wife Ashley might be heading for a divorce.
