Golf Star Rory McIlroy Commits to Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Bid for Sixth Race To Dubai Crown
Four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy is once again setting his sights on the prestigious Race To Dubai title. The World No. 2 golfer has added a familiar event to his schedule, committing to the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the DP World Tour later this year. This decision is part of McIlroy’s strategy to inch closer to Colin Montgomerie’s record of eight Harry Vardon trophies.
McIlroy’s pursuit of a sixth Race To Dubai crown would place him alongside the legendary Seve Ballesteros. With a track record that boasts numerous close finishes but no victories in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, McIlroy is hopeful that his participation in this event will be pivotal in achieving his goal. His recent victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, where he narrowly triumphed over Cameron Young and Adrian Meronk, has bolstered his confidence.
The 35-year-old Northern Irishman has a long history with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, having played there 12 times. His impressive record includes four runner-up finishes, four third-place results, and a T5, with only one missed cut in 2013. Determined to finally secure a win, McIlroy will compete at Yas Links from November 7-10, marking the start of the European Tour’s new two-part playoff series.
Speaking to DP World Tour media staff, McIlroy expressed his enthusiasm for the Middle East events: “It’s no secret that I love playing golf in the Middle East, and having the opportunity to play in these two events back-to-back will be a great way to end the season. I’d love to lift the trophy in Abu Dhabi and have the chance to top the Race to Dubai Rankings again.”
The top 70 players in the European Tour’s Order of Merit at the end of the ‘Back Nine’ portion of the calendar will converge in Abu Dhabi later in the season. Among them, the top 10 golfers not already exempt will earn PGA Tour cards for the 2025 campaign. McIlroy, whose status on the US circuit is secure for several years following his victory at the Wells Fargo Championship, remains focused on European success.
Currently on a brief hiatus after a disappointing end at the US Open at Pinehurst No.2, McIlroy announced he would take a few weeks off before returning to action at the Genesis Scottish Open, followed by the Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club in July.
