Negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf are heating up once again, but one key figure will be notably absent from the talks: Rory McIlroy. Despite his significant influence within the PGA, McIlroy has chosen to forgo these crucial meetings to concentrate on his game at The Memorial this weekend. This decision comes as a surprise to some, given McIlroy’s past involvement in the rivalry between the two tours. However, the golfer has made it clear in recent weeks that his primary focus is now solely on playing golf.

A Shift in Priorities for McIlroy

In a candid admission, McIlroy expressed his regret over his deep involvement in the ongoing feud between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. He has decided to step back from the political fray and leave the negotiations to others. “Looking a few years down the line, LIV is going to continue to sort of keep going down its path. But hopefully with maybe more of a collaboration or an understanding between the tours. Maybe there is some cross-pollination there where players can start to play on both. I guess that will all be talked about in the coming weeks,” McIlroy said.

The transaction committee, which includes representatives from both sides, has been meeting regularly to hammer out the details. Representatives from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) have also been present in recent weeks. Despite the high stakes, McIlroy has chosen not to attend these meetings. “There’s going to be people in that room on the PGA Tour side who are going to take the lead,” McIlroy explained, emphasizing that the meetings will be dominated by key business figures rather than players. “And it’s not going to be Adam, Tiger or I. That’s going to be Jay, Joe Gorder, Joe Ogilvie, John Henry. It’s going to be the business guys. We’re there to maybe give a perspective from a player’s point of view.”

Listening Over Talking

McIlroy also highlighted the limited representation from players at these meetings, another factor in his decision to skip them. “This is a negotiation about an investment in the PGA Tour Enterprises, this is big boy stuff. And I’ll certainly be doing more listening than I will be doing talking,” he added. The role of the PIF in these negotiations remains uncertain, especially in light of potential regulatory constraints. “I think depending on what the DOJ (the U.S. Department of Justice) allows, it might have to be a very passive investment,” McIlroy speculated. “I don’t know what’s in their head. I don’t know if that is something that they are willing to do. We’ll find out.”

The anticipated merger between the two tours last spring has yet to materialize, prolonging the conflict and its repercussions. The ongoing exodus of PGA players to LIV Golf continues to strain relations between the two entities.
