Robert MacIntyre won’t be ‘legally able to drive’ to The Open as he celebrates rapturous Scottish Open victory

Scottish golf sensation Robert MacIntyre may find himself needing assistance to reach Royal Troon this week after his spectacular victory at the Scottish Open.

 

The 27-year-old clinched a thrilling win at the Renaissance Club on Sunday, igniting celebrations despite the imminent start of the 152nd Open Championship on Thursday.

 

In a dramatic finish, MacIntyre birdied his final hole in North Berwick, narrowly edging out Adam Scott by a single stroke to claim the prestigious title. This victory marks a significant redemption for MacIntyre, who suffered a heartbreaking loss to Rory McIlroy in the final moments of last year’s Scottish Open.

 

Openly passionate about winning his home event, MacIntyre was in high spirits and ready to celebrate his achievement. “I think there might be a change of schedule,” MacIntyre hinted about his planned Open press conference set for Monday afternoon. “I don’t think I’ll be in a fit state to get to Troon. I don’t think I’ll be legally able to drive.”

 

Undeterred by the upcoming challenge, he added, “This, I’m going to celebrate hard, and I’ll pitch up [at Troon] when I tee the ball on Thursday, whatever time I tee off, I’ll try to win the championship. There might be some alcohol still in the system, but I will try my best.”

 

MacIntyre’s victory caps off an impressive year, including a standout performance at the Ryder Cup and his maiden PGA Tour win at the Canadian Open last month. With his Scottish Open title now added to his growing list of accolades, he is eager to continue his strong showing at The Open.

 

Reflecting on his triumph, MacIntyre said, “How I come down from this, I don’t think I will. I think I will just try and ride the wave, and next week, yeah, it’s the Open Championship, that means, again, a lot to me. But you’ve got to celebrate the good times because it doesn’t happen a lot.”

 

The victory was particularly sweet for MacIntyre, who let out a jubilant scream upon sealing his win. “I’ve lost my voice from the scream that I let out. Last year was heartbreaking, but this year, it means everything. This is one that I said I wanted at some point in my career, and I got it today.”
