Golf correspondent Amanda Balionis is en route to North Berwick for the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open, where she will interview Rory McIlroy. This marks her first public encounter with the Northern Irishman since their rumored fling.

 

Balionis, covering the final two days of the tournament for CBS Sports, couldn’t contain her excitement. She shared her anticipation on Instagram, posting a picture with her passport and captioning it: “See ya soon North Berwick,” alongside a love heart emoji. She also gave a shout-out to the Scottish Open, running from July 11 to July 14.

 

Balionis will interview star players and those contending for victory, including McIlroy, who is returning to competitive golf for the first time since his heartache at the US Open. McIlroy is being supported at the tournament by his wife, Erica Stoll, making her first public appearance at a golf event since they withdrew divorce proceedings just weeks earlier.

 

Rumors had swirled about a romantic fling between McIlroy and Balionis after McIlroy filed for divorce. However, these speculations were reported to be unfounded. Balionis, who did not cover the US Open following news of McIlroy and Stoll’s reconciliation, hasn’t crossed paths with McIlroy for several weeks.

 

Balionis, married to ex-NFL quarterback Bryn Renner, was spotted without her wedding ring during an interview with McIlroy at the RBC Canadian Open in June. Their chemistry in a previous interview at the Wells Fargo Championship had already sparked speculation among golf fans. At that time, McIlroy was planning to part ways with Stoll, having filed for divorce and declared their marriage over. However, the couple decided to call off the divorce last month, and McIlroy addressed the rumors about his personal life.

 

“There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game,” McIlroy stated. “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

 

McIlroy and Stoll appear to be on the path to reconciliation, as she supported him during the first round of the Scottish Open. McIlroy finished the round five under, tied for eighth place in the tournament so far. Despite being early in the competition, McIlroy’s Round 1 performance was a promising comeback from his rollercoaster ride at the 2024 US Open, where he finished second to Bryson DeChambeau after a heartbreaking finish.

 

At the US Open, McIlroy’s putting let him down at key times. A missed par putt on the 16th hole and a short par putt inside 3 feet on the 18th saw him fall out of contention for the title. Now, at the Scottish Open, he aims to put those disappointments behind him and focus on the future.
