On Monday, Bland clinched the US Senior Open title at Newport Country Club, adding to his Senior PGA Championship victory last month and marking his second consecutive senior major championship.
Bland’s victory places him in an elite group, joining Nicklaus, Hale Irwin, Roger Chapman, and Colin Montgomerie as winners of both the Senior PGA and Senior US Open. This remarkable achievement came after a dramatic final round in Newport, Rhode Island, which was extended to Monday due to adverse weather conditions.
The English golfer faced a three-shot deficit with just eight holes remaining. Despite the odds, Bland surged to the top of the leaderboard, only to encounter a setback with a bogey on the 18th hole, pushing the contest to a playoff against Hiroyuki Fujita.
In a gripping four-hole playoff, Bland secured victory with an extraordinary bunker shot, flying the ball straight at the pin and setting up a simple par to clinch the title. Fujita, meanwhile, could only manage a bogey, handing Bland the win.
Bland’s triumph not only earned him a prize of £633,000 ($800,000) but also solidified his status as a major champion. “This is very special. I’m struggling to put this into words right now. It was a tough day, we were chasing him all week. I think he had the lead pretty much wire-to-wire,” Bland said post-victory. “I made a great birdie on 15 to go one in front and tried to trip over myself on the last. I’m just thrilled beyond words to be stood here. To go two-for-two is beyond my wildest dreams.”
At 51, Bland’s career has seen a resurgence since joining the LIV Golf setup in 2022. His stellar performances in senior majors contrast sharply with his limited appearances in regular major championships. However, his affiliation with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf has led to his exclusion from PGA Tour Champions events, reflecting the ongoing conflict between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.
