Professional golfer Abraham Ancer has revisited his 2019 Presidents Cup interaction with Tiger Woods, clarifying that his comments were widely misrepresented. During the event, Ancer expressed a desire to compete against Woods, the Team USA captain, sparking immediate attention.
Ancer stated, “I would like to play against Tiger (Woods),” emphasizing the international team’s goal of winning. He explained, “But the truth is that our objective is to do everything we can to win. Winning a match in the singles would be very special, so we need to try to get the cup.”
His remarks stirred discussion, with many interpreting them as a direct challenge to Woods. However, when they faced off at Royal Melbourne, Woods emerged victorious, prompting his assertive comment, “Abe wanted it, he got it.”
Years later, Ancer reflected on the incident, eager to clarify that there were no ill intentions or overconfidence on his part. He expressed frustration at the media’s misrepresentation, stating, “I get all these tweets, ‘Abraham Ancer wants Tiger.’ That is not what I said.” Ancer explained that his name being mentioned first by Team International captain Ernie Els led to Woods choosing to play against him. Ancer speculated whether Woods wanted to compete against him or simply fulfill his duties as a playing captain.
Ancer emphasized his admiration for Woods, saying, “It would be amazing to play against my hero. I don’t know who wouldn’t.” He concluded by expressing disappointment at the media’s exaggeration of his initial comments.
