LIV Golf’s Mega Prize Awaits: Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann Battle for $18 Million Championship Title
The 2024 LIV Golf season is nearing its thrilling conclusion, with only two golfing giants left in contention for the coveted individual championship title. Former Masters champion Jon Rahm and Chilean sensation Joaquin Niemann will clash in a nail-biting finale at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday.
The stakes are astronomically high, with the winner set to pocket a staggering $18 million (£13.7 million) and claim the prestigious LIV Golf Individual Championship title. This monumental prize fund matches the amounts won by 2023 champion Talor Gooch and 2022 winner Dustin Johnson.
Rahm, boasting an impressive score of 195.17, has consistently demonstrated exceptional form this season, securing one win and never finishing outside the top 10. Niemann, with two tour victories under his belt, trails closely behind with a score of 192, comfortably ahead of third-place Tyrrell Hatton by nearly 50 points.
The LIV Golf Chicago event boasts a substantial prize pot of $25 million (£19.1 million), with the top five finishers receiving:
1. $4 million (£3.1 million) for the winner
2. $2.25 million (£1.7 million) for second place
3. $1.5 million (£1.1 million) for third
4. $1 million (£760,000) for fourth
5. $800,000 (£601,000) for fifth
Additionally, teams will also be rewarded for their performances, with Crushers GC leading the LIV Team standings thanks to Bryson DeChambeau’s outstanding showings. The winning team at LIV Golf Chicago will receive $3 million (£2.3 million), followed by $1.5 million (£1.1 million) for second place.
The ultimate champion will also receive a stunning diamond championship ring, adorned with 5.78 carats of white diamonds and 1.2 carats of green emeralds, similar to those awarded to NBA or NFL players for winning their league titles.
Rahm and Niemann are well aware of the magnitude of this opportunity. “I’m trying to picture what it looks like right now, and I can’t get that in my mind,” Rahm said about the ring. “But honestly, who cares what it is as long as you’re the one that has it? That’s, I think, what most of us will be thinking.”
Niemann echoed Rahm’s sentiments, adding a touch of humor. “Probably my wife won’t be happy knowing that my ring would have more [diamonds]. No, I feel it’s pretty special. It’s a little different than other trophies, so it would be pretty cool to have an extra ring.”
As Rahm and Niemann vie for the LIV title, other top golfers like Hatton, Sergio Garcia, and Louis Oosthuizen aim to finish the season on a high note. Rahm currently leads the Chicago championship on seven-under, one shot ahead of Garcia in second, while Niemann trails just three shots behind his title rival heading into the final round.
