Jon Rahm Overcomes Injury Scare at LIV Golf Houston to Card Under-Par Round

Wincing in Pain but Not Defeated

On Friday at LIV Golf Houston, Jon Rahm faced an unexpected injury scare just a week before the highly anticipated US Open, the third men’s Major of 2024. Rahm, a formidable competitor, was seen wincing in pain at the par-3 seventh hole during the first round, causing concern among fans and commentators alike. Despite this setback, he displayed remarkable resilience, battling through the discomfort to card a three-under-par 69 at the Golf Club of Houston.

The Cause of Rahm’s Pain

Initial reports suggested that Rahm had been receiving treatment on his foot prior to the round. However, the LIV Golf broadcast later clarified that the cause of his discomfort was a cut between his toes, an injury that, while painful, was not deemed overly significant. Rahm’s ability to manage the pain and maintain his focus on the game became evident as the round progressed.

Rahm’s Impressive Round

After parring the troublesome seventh hole, Rahm found his rhythm. He birdied the eighth, 10th, 12th, and 13th holes, demonstrating his skill and determination. A double bogey on the 18th hole, his 16th of the day, briefly set him back to two-under-par. Nevertheless, Rahm finished strong with a par and a birdie, concluding the day with a commendable three-under 69. This performance placed him in a tie for 15th, just four strokes behind leaders Martin Kaymer, Adrian Meronk, and Caleb Surratt.

Road to the US Open

This appearance at LIV Golf Houston marked Rahm’s first start since missing the cut at the PGA Championship in May. Despite that setback, Rahm has maintained an impressive record, being the only player on the LIV Golf roster to finish inside the top 10 at all seven events in 2024.

Looking Ahead

With Rahm sitting at 15th after the first day, sharing the spot with 10 others, the coming weeks promise to be busy for many on the LIV Golf circuit. A total of 12 LIV players are set to compete at Pinehurst No.2 next week for the US Open. Rahm, who became the first Spaniard to win the event in 2021, will then proceed to LIV Golf Nashville the week following the US Open, and later feature at LIV Golf Andalucía in his home country of Spain, at Valderrama.
