Jason Day Reacts to Pairing with Tiger Woods at the Masters
In an unexpected twist of fate, Jason Day, the 2011 Masters runner-up, found himself in a surprising pairing alongside golf legend Tiger Woods for the first two days at Augusta National. Day’s reaction was nothing short of candid and comical, exclaiming, “Who me? I had no idea. That’s exciting. I’m happy about that. That’s a good pairing. As long as I beat that old man, I’m happy.”
However, Day’s jest belies the formidable challenge Woods poses. Despite being 48 years old, Woods boasts an illustrious record with five Green Jacket wins and 15 major championships under his belt. His prowess at Augusta is legendary, having made the cut 23 consecutive times, a feat equaled only by Gary Player and Fred Couples.
Speaking of Couples, who played nine practice holes with Woods, he was impressed by the legend’s performance. Couples remarked, “I think the last thing he’s thinking about is making the cut. Can he win here? I just watched him play nine holes, and nine holes are only nine holes on a Tuesday, but he never mishits a shot.”
While Day may approach the pairing with humor, he’s well aware of the challenge ahead. To outshine Woods and secure a spot in the weekend rounds, Day will need to bring his A-game. Despite a solid start to the year with top-10 finishes at The Sentry, Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the Genesis Invitational, Day’s recent performances have been inconsistent, finishing outside the top ranks in tournaments like the Arnold Palmer, Players, and Houston Open.
On the other hand, Woods, who withdrew from the Genesis Invitational due to illness, is adopting a play-once-a-month strategy and kicks off his campaign at Augusta. The duo, along with Max Homa, will tee off at 1:24 pm ET on Thursday.
As speculation mounts over who will perform better in the first two days, Day or Woods, the stage is set for an exciting showdown at the Masters.
