Iga Swiatek Withdraws from China Open, Sabalenka Set to Lead Star-Studded Field
Beijing (AP) – World No. 1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the upcoming China Open in Beijing, citing personal reasons.
“Due to personal matters, I’m unfortunately unable to participate in this year’s China Open,” Swiatek said in a statement. “I have such fond memories of winning the tournament last year and was excited to return, so it saddens me to miss out.”
The Polish star, who has claimed victory in four of the eight WTA 1000 events this year, last competed at the U.S. Open, where she suffered a quarterfinal loss to Jessica Pegula. Swiatek had also recently pulled out of the Korea Open in Seoul, citing fatigue.
Joining Swiatek on the withdrawal list is Maria Sakkari, ranked No. 9, who continues to struggle with a shoulder injury, and Danielle Collins, who is sidelined due to illness.
Despite these withdrawals, the tournament will still see fierce competition, with U.S. Open champion Aryna Sabalenka stepping in as the top seed. Sabalenka has twice reached the quarterfinals in her three previous appearances at the China Open. U.S. Open finalist Jessica Pegula is expected to be seeded No. 2, adding to the intrigue of the event.
The stage is set for a thrilling tournament, even with the absence of some major names.
