In a bold statement to the media, Tiger Woods hinted at extending his illustrious career into his 50s, showing optimism as he prepares for The Open at Scotland’s Royal Troon Golf Club from July 18-21.
After completing 18 holes on Sunday, Woods revisited the back nine alongside friends Justin Thomas and Max Homa, gaining confidence from this preview ahead of the upcoming tournament starting Thursday. Reflecting on his ability to add to his 15 Majors, Woods expressed determination, stating, “I’ll play as long as I can and still believe I can win.”
Responding to criticism from retired golfer Colin Montgomerie, who recently remarked on his own lack of enjoyment at the US Open in June, Woods defended his position, highlighting his exempt status as a past champion until age 60. “Colin’s not a past champion, so he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do,” Woods asserted firmly.
Woods’ spirited response underscores his reluctance to entertain retirement talks while he still feels competitive in tournaments. However, his recent performance at the US Open, where he missed the cut by two strokes, highlighted the challenges he faces in returning to top form.
Admitting uncertainty about future appearances at Pinehurst or other majors, Woods acknowledged, “It’s frustrating when you can’t make the cut to contend.” He reflected on his efforts, noting, “I thought I played well enough to be up there.”
Injuries stemming from a serious car accident in 2021 have significantly impacted Woods’ later career stages, including missing The Open in 2023 due to surgery. His upcoming participation marks a return to St. Andrews, where his previous attempt in 2022 also saw him miss the cut.
