In a surprising twist at the 2024 US Open, Rory McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, faced harsh criticism from golf analyst Smylie Kaufman. This critique, centered around a single shot on the 15th hole during the fourth round, has sparked a significant debate in the golf community.

 

Rory McIlroy, 35, was quick to defend his caddie. On Thursday, July 10, he labeled the criticism as “unfair” in a strong statement. Kaufman, who originally made his comments on Golf Magazine’s ‘Subpar’ podcast, took to his X account to clarify his stance, stating:

 

“When good shots end up in bad places, I always have to question the decision-making as it’s my job to do so. I have nothing but respect for Rory [McIlroy] and Harry [Diamond] as I think they make a great team and wishing them both the best this week and future weeks.”

 

The controversy started when Kaufman suggested that McIlroy should have used an 8-iron instead of a 7-iron for his approach shot on the 15th hole, hinting that Diamond was partly to blame. Kaufman remarked, “I felt like Harry Diamond really should have stepped in on the 15th hole,” (via GolfWRX).

 

Smylie Kaufman, a former professional golfer with one PGA Tour victory, transitioned to broadcasting after retiring in 2021. His critique has clearly struck a nerve with McIlroy, who is currently defending his title at the Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Golf Club, with plans to compete in the Open Championship at Royal Troon soon after.

 

During a press conference at the Renaissance Golf Club, McIlroy was asked about the controversy surrounding his caddie. He passionately defended Diamond, who has been with him since 2017. McIlroy highlighted their many successes together, including two FedEx Cups, the 2024 Dubai Desert Classic, and the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this season. He also mentioned the two Ryder Cups that Diamond helped him win.

 

“They are never there to say Harry did such a great job when I win, but they are always there to criticise when we don’t win,” McIlroy asserted (via Independent).

 

McIlroy’s close finish at the 2024 US Open, just one stroke behind Bryson DeChambeau, has been the subject of intense scrutiny. Despite multiple opportunities to secure a playoff or even take the lead, including the pivotal 15th hole, McIlroy’s performance fell short. His missed putts from inside four feet on the 16th and 18th holes were particularly glaring, the latter denying him a chance at a sudden-death challenge against DeChambeau.

 

As McIlroy continues his campaign in Scotland, the golfing world remains captivated by the unfolding drama.
