Four-time PGA Tour winner forced out of Wyndham Championship
Four-time PGA Tour winner Harris English has been forced to withdraw from the Wyndham Championship due to a back injury. English, 35, was set to tee off in the first round alongside Kevin Kisner and Daniel Berger, but officially withdrew from the tournament shortly before his scheduled start time.
Kevin Tway stepped in to replace English in the field, as the tournament got underway after a delayed start due to bad weather in the Greensboro area. The 2024 Wyndham Championship was initially postponed on Thursday, and another three hours of play were lost on Friday morning. However, play eventually began just before lunchtime, with PGA Tour officials working to get the first round completed by Saturday morning at the latest.
The tournament schedule has been impacted by the weather, with plans to complete the second round by Saturday night and leave a 36-hole finish on Sunday. If all 72 holes cannot be completed by Sunday night, the tournament may extend into a Monday finish, which the PGA Tour hopes to avoid, especially with the first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs starting next week.
English’s withdrawal is a disappointment for the American, who has struggled with form this season. With only two top-10 finishes in 2024, English has slipped to 60th in the world rankings, down from his career-high ranking of 10th. Despite his recent struggles, English has a strong track record on the PGA Tour, with four victories, including his last win at the 2021 Travelers Championship.
English also made his debut in the US Ryder Cup team in 2021, contributing one point from three matches as the Americans dominated with a record 19-9 scoreline at Whistling Straits. The back injury that forced English’s withdrawal from the Wyndham Championship will be a concern for the American, who will hope to recover quickly and regain his form ahead of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
