Former University of Texas Star Scottie Scheffler Named to 2024 US Olympic Men’s Golf Team
In an exciting announcement made by USA Golf on Tuesday, Scottie Scheffler, a former University of Texas standout, has been selected to represent the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Scheffler, currently ranked No. 1 in the world, will join Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, and Collin Morikawa on Team USA, competing at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, France, from August 1-4.
Historic Moment for the University of Texas
Scheffler’s inclusion on the team marks a significant milestone for the University of Texas, as he becomes the third Longhorn men’s golfer to participate in the Olympics and the first to represent Team USA. Jhonattan Vegas, who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for Venezuela, and Brandon Stone, who represented South Africa at the 2016 Rio Olympics, are the other two University of Texas golfers to have participated in the Olympics.
Selection Process
The selection process for the 2024 US Olympic Men’s Golf Team was based on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). The top 15 players in the world rankings earned automatic spots, with a maximum of four players allowed per country. Scheffler, Schauffele (ranked third), Clark (fifth), and Morikawa (seventh) all secured their places on the team through their impressive world rankings.
Olympic Qualifying Guidelines
Following the automatic spots, players earned spots based on their positions in the world rankings over a two-year period, culminating in the recently completed U.S. Open. A maximum of two additional spots were available for each country. The men’s field at the Paris Olympics will comprise 60 individuals.
