Brooks Koepka has recently shared his perspective on the ongoing discussions regarding a potential merger between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. Known for his remarkable career, including five major championship victories, Koepka left the PGA Tour in 2022 to join LIV Golf, which was a major shift in the golfing world.

 

Koepka, now a significant figure in LIV Golf, has commented on the current state of negotiations between the two rival tours. Despite months of intense discussions and public speculation, the two organizations have yet to finalize any agreement. According to reports, discussions have included high-profile meetings, such as those involving Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and key figures like Tiger Woods.

 

On a recent episode of the “Pardon My Take” podcast, where Koepka was joined by fellow LIV Golf player Talor Gooch, he shared his insights on the potential merger. Koepka expressed a belief that the ongoing rivalry between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour might resolve itself within the next two years. He speculated that, eventually, the two tours could find a way to coexist, potentially leading to a scenario where they play together or even face off in some form of competition.

 

“I feel like in two years from now, I think we’ll all be laughing about this, and we’ll all be playing somewhere [together],” Koepka said. His optimism about the eventual resolution of the dispute was tempered by the reality that, as of now, there have been no substantive updates or details about how such a merger might be structured. “It might be a LIV vs PGA Tour thing. Who knows what it could be, so we’ll see,” he added, reflecting the uncertainty that still surrounds the discussions.

 

Despite his optimism, Koepka acknowledged that the talks have seen numerous deadlines pass without a resolution. He admitted that he and other LIV Golf players are not privy to the details of the proposed merger framework, stating simply, “No” when asked if they had any information about what the deal might look like.

 

The talks between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour have been complex and fraught with challenges. While a merger remains a distant possibility, the two tours have managed to reach some agreements recently. Notably, LIV Golf players are now allowed to participate in major PGA Tour events, such as the Masters and the Ryder Cup, provided they meet the qualification criteria. For instance, LIV Golf players are excluded from the President’s Cup, an event that pits a team of American golfers against an international team representing the rest of the world (excluding Europe). This tournament, organized by the PGA Tour, has traditionally featured the top American players, and Koepka, along with Gooch, would typically be strong contenders for inclusion. Nevertheless, the current rules prevent LIV Golf players from participating.

 

Koepka, who was a member of the USA Ryder Cup team in 2023, acknowledged the situation. He noted that the President’s Cup is governed by the PGA Tour, and as such, LIV Golf players are not allowed to compete. Gooch, when asked about his feelings on the exclusion from the President’s Cup, chose to avoid stirring controversy, stating, “I don’t like causing any chaos or anything so I’ll just let them do their thing.”

 

Meanwhile, the American team for the upcoming President’s Cup has been announced, with notable players such as Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, Sahith Theegala, Keegan Bradley, Sam Burns, Tony Finau, Brian Harman, Russell Henley, and Max Homa securing spots. Zach Johnson has been appointed as the captain of the team.

 

Reflecting on his move to LIV Golf, Koepka had previously predicted that many top PGA Tour players would eventually join the breakaway league. His foresight came true as he became the first LIV Golf player to win a major PGA Tour event, capturing his third major championship in 2023.
