Despite his initial commitment to play in the 3M Open, Billy Horschel was forced to withdraw from the tournament on Thursday due to illness. Horschel, who finished tied for second at The Open Championship, had expressed his desire to carry momentum forward and continue playing while he’s in good form.

When asked if he considered withdrawing from the 3M Open, Horschel had responded with a resounding “No”, stating, “When I commit to something, I try to hold to that commitment unless crazy circumstances arise.” Unfortunately, those “crazy circumstances” materialized on Thursday morning in the form of a fever and muscle lockup.
Disappointing Withdrawal
Horschel expressed his disappointment at not being able to play in the 3M Open, saying, “Yeah, it was unfortunate… I wasn’t feeling great late last night and took some medicine. Woke up, had decent sleep but woke up and just have a fever, body is just not wanting to respond, every muscle feels like it’s locked up.” He added, “Disappointing. I was looking forward to playing here at 3M. Played here last year, had a good finish.”

With Horschel’s withdrawal, the focus shifted to the first-round action, where PGA Tour rookie Jacob Bridgeman took the lead with an impressive 8-under round of 63. Bridgeman, who reached the tour via the Korn Ferry Tour last season, carded nine birdies to take a one-shot lead over Mackenzie Hughes.

Meanwhile, North Oaks’ native Frankie Capan III, who turned down a sponsor’s exemption to the 3M Open to focus on gathering more Korn Ferry Tour points, found himself in a tie for 23rd place at the NV5 Invitational in Glenview, Illinois, after firing a 5-under round of 66. Capan’s decision seems to be paying off, as he looks to climb the FedExCup standings.
