Keegan Bradley has been given a new role as a vice captain for the upcoming Presidents Cup, as confirmed by the PGA Tour on Wednesday. This appointment, made by U.S. team captain Jim Furyk, is seen as a preparation for Bradley’s future role as the Ryder Cup captain.
Bradley, 38, was unexpectedly named as the captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in July. Prior to this, it was anticipated that Stewart Cink, Fred Couples, or Davis Love III might be chosen, especially after Tiger Woods declined the position.
For the 2024 Presidents Cup, Bradley will join Stewart Cink, Justin Leonard, and Kevin Kisner as vice captains. The event will take place from September 27-29 at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada.
Furyk praised Bradley, stating, “Keegan is a tremendous competitor with a bulldog mentality. We look forward to having his voice in the team room in Montreal. His passion for match play will be a great asset for our team in 2024 and as he leads them into the 2025 Ryder Cup.”
Bradley expressed his excitement about the new role, noting, “With the Ryder Cup on the horizon next year, this will be a great experience to understand the team dynamics and how coaching can help our players perform their best.”
The International team will be led by Canada’s Mike Weir, who has selected Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Geoff Ogilvy, and Camilo Villegas as his vice captains. The U.S. team has historically dominated the Presidents Cup, winning 12 of the 14 matches played.
Bradley’s selection as Ryder Cup captain surprised many, including Rory McIlroy, who expressed disbelief and suggested that it would be difficult for Bradley to serve as a playing captain. McIlroy, who is also preparing for the Olympics, recently had a heated exchange about the Ryder Cup while playing at St Andrews.
Bradley will be the youngest Ryder Cup captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963.
