Chelsea Captain Reece James Faces New Injury Setback
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that captain Reece James is dealing with another injury setback, further delaying his return to full fitness. The 24-year-old right-back has struggled with recurring fitness issues in recent seasons, and this latest setback means he will miss Chelsea’s upcoming match against Leicester City.
James has played just 241 minutes across four Premier League appearances this season and has not started more than 25 league games in a campaign since the 2018/19 season during his loan at Wigan Athletic. His persistent injuries have also impacted his international career, with James last representing England in March 2023.
Maeresa explained the situation at his pre-match press conference, stating, “Unfortunately, Reece felt something small and we don’t want to take a risk for this game. He felt something, so he will be out for sure this week. After that, we have to assess the situation further.”
James’ injury woes have been a blow to both Chelsea and England, and the club will now have to navigate yet another stretch without their captain. Maresca, who faces his former club Leicester for the first time since taking charge at Chelsea, will be hoping for a positive result despite the setback.
