Rafael Nadal expresses his gratitude as he returns to the tennis court for the first time since January at the Barcelona Open this week. Dealing with injuries that sidelined him for nearly a year, Nadal’s comeback in Brisbane was cut short due to a hip issue. Now, at 37, Nadal acknowledges the significance of playing in Barcelona once more, hinting at the possibility that this year might be his last on the tour.
“I can’t provide a comprehensive injury update because the list is lengthy,” Nadal stated. “However, I feel sufficiently good today to step onto the court tomorrow, and that’s crucial for me.”
Nadal, a dominant force with 22 Grand Slam singles titles, has battled recurring injuries in recent years, including withdrawing from the 2023 French Open. Initially planning to retire after the 2024 season, he hinted at extending his career if his fitness permits during his return in Brisbane.
His upcoming match against 21-year-old Italian Flavio Cobolli in Barcelona, where he has triumphed a record 12 times, marks his first clay court appearance since winning the 2022 French Open final. His presence this week raises hopes of his participation in next month’s Roland Garros, where he has clinched 14 major titles.
“To play once again here in Barcelona, a venue filled with amazing memories and successes, holds immense significance for me,” Nadal expressed. “I aim to savor every moment and relish the opportunity to compete professionally again, particularly here at home.”
Reflecting on the challenges of the past two years, he added, “I haven’t had many opportunities to be on tour recently, so I’m eager to cherish every day I spend playing alongside my fellow professionals. It holds great meaning for me.”
