Suspended in Awe: Neal Shipley Reflects on Playing with Tiger Woods at Augusta National
Neal Shipley, an amateur golfer, recently shared his remarkable experience of playing alongside his childhood hero, Tiger Woods, at the 2024 Masters Tournament. Shipley, the only amateur to make the cut at Augusta National this year, described the experience as “the frickin’ coolest day of my life” during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN.
Reflecting on his round with Woods, Shipley expressed awe and gratitude, acknowledging the rarity of the opportunity to play alongside the 15-major champion. He recounted moments of amazement, such as witnessing Woods receive a standing ovation on the 12th tee and walking up the 18th hole. Shipley also mentioned a personal highlight when Woods complimented his drive on the second hole, a moment he described as “freaking stick.”
Shipley’s excitement peaked when he learned he would be paired with Woods for the final round. Despite initially feeling disheartened after a third-round 80, Shipley’s spirits were lifted when his caddie, Carter Pitcairn, revealed the pairing. Shipley’s final round performance included shooting a 1-over 73, earning him the Silver Cup and culminating in what he called a “dream week.”
Looking ahead, Shipley acknowledges the challenge of surpassing such a memorable experience, jokingly suggesting that he may need to win the Masters to top it. Nevertheless, the experience of playing with his childhood hero at Augusta National will remain a cherished memory for Shipley.
