In a surprising move, LIV Golf’s 2023 champion Talor Gooch has decided not to vie for a spot in the U.S. Open or the Open Championship this year, leaving him without a single Major Championship start for the season.

 

Despite his remarkable performance over the past year, clinching three victories on the LIV Golf League and securing top-ten finishes on three occasions this season, Gooch finds himself ranked a lowly 624th in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). This position disqualifies him from qualifying through the top 60 in the OWGR for the U.S. Open or the top 50 for The Open.

 

While Gooch’s decision may raise eyebrows, especially given his exceptional form, he remains unperturbed about missing out on the opportunity to showcase his skills on golf’s grandest stages.

 

“I’m not,” Gooch curtly responded when asked about his intentions to qualify for the last two Majors of the year.

 

This announcement follows Gooch’s previous headline-making comments regarding a potential Rory McIlroy Grand Slam victory at the Masters Tournament, suggesting that it would carry an asterisk without the presence of top players.

 

While Gooch steps back, his Smash GC teammates, Graeme McDowell and Jason Kokrak, are gearing up for the challenge, confirming their participation in the qualifying rounds. Kokrak expressed his determination, stating, “I personally am. Doing the U.S. Open in Columbus and then the Open in Manchester. I plan on playing both of them.”

 

McDowell echoed Kokrak’s sentiment, revealing, “Yeah, I’m the same. I’ve entered for both qualifiers. I think I’m in Florida Monday of Houston and then just south of London the Tuesday of the International Series Morocco, which I’ll go and play right after the Open qualifying series. Obviously I’ll be pulling hard for this guy [teammate Brooks Koepka] in a couple weeks’ time [at the PGA Championship] but obviously trying to get into a couple Majors myself.”
